Let’s play, let’s play

For some reason I keep waking up at 6:30 a.m. every day. Big deal, I’m sure a good half of you are thinking. And yeah, OK, it’s not much for me to complain about. But please bear in mind that the average time at which most people roll into work around 1UP is between 10 and 10:30. I guess even my body wants to be an iconoclast these days.

This means, unfortunately, I’m too tired to concentrate on anything right now — work, writing, blogging, whatever. I should be taking another shot at the first stratum’s boss in Etrian Odyssey II, at the very least; the El Spite guild’s new members Kayleigh the Gunner and Su Ai the War Magus aren’t pulling their weight nearly as well as they should right now and it’s very irritating. Of course, it doesn’t help that the boss in question is a right bastard. Remember Fenrir? He was a giant sack of wuss next to this guy.

Since I’m too drowsy to write about my own RPG exploits, I’ll let the Talking Time crew take charge. A few forumgoers have begun ripping off Something Awful wholesale with “Let’s Play”-style threads in which they chronicle their video game experiences step-by-step. In fact, uh, they’re even calling it “Let’s Play.” But the results are actually better than the bulk of original SA threads I’ve seen, so give ’em a read and be entertained:

  1. Now all we need is the occasional incredible story, and there’d be no more reason to visit the Something Awful forum. But alas! We Talking Tyrants are terminally uninteresting.

  2. I’m kind of scared to go near Etrian Odyssey 2 now. Rondo of Swords is kicking my ass every which way. Anyway, you should take a nap!

  3. Wow, ripping off of Something Awful.

Talking Time has offically reached the dirt underneath the bottom of the barrel.

  4. Waking up early doesn’t really bother much as it is – if only I did it consistently and my biological clock adjusted accordingly. Case in point – I’m to get up for work at 5 AM, two hours and 10 minutes from from the current time, and I work in the evening Friday, as I did today (Wednesday). Plus side to shift work is that often times you’re granted larger swarths of time off allotting one to catch up on shut eye.

Oh, and I thought one of the old gamer stereotypes was that they rarely cracked the noon barrier. At least if my body always had its way, this is how I’d do it. Of course, if my body always had its way, things would be much different.

I click on Dragon Warrior and I see three pages of wank and no actual gameplay. Something Awful does not suck quite that much, so, you might want to reword that?

  6. The irony evidently escapes you, Vin. Three pages of pre-game discussion is far better than anything SA has to offer. Cheaper, too!

  7. The bulk of Let’s Play threads fizzle out with little interaction between the author and readers. (Most reader feedback amounts to WHY HAVEN’T YOU UPDATED THIS IN THE PAST COUPLE OF HOURS YOU OWE US OUR FREE ENTERTAINMENT.) I really would prefer to read three pages of nothing over a bunch of whiny entitlement.

I’m waiting on Brickroad to finish his FF1 one first. No point in stealing his little spotlight; we can all take turns.

  9. I’ve gotta say, the LP forum is the only one I ever read (except when it’s blocking unregistered users), so I’m rather excited that a site I’m actually registered to is developing the one thing that draws me to SA.

Maybe it’ll develop into a fully fledged thing! One can only dream of the day one will host a successful one of these things.

  10. It’s BOSS, EDIT, ADAM and SKUB :S

Yes, but Parish obviously realized that my name suggestions were better. :)
